Custom 3" Exhaust Install

The previous post was about the custom 3" exhaust I purchased from a fellow audiziner for $500. This was a Vibrant custom exhaust featuring resonators, mufflers and 4" tips. The installation was straight forward conceptually, but the real world can be so different.

It all started on Saturday about noon armed with the exhaust (received on Thu), gaskets, new nuts/bolts, and some extra tools from Harbour Freight.  I previously read on a4mods.com that the trickiest part of this installation was getting the old downpipe off the catalytic convertor.  That proved to be very true in my case and not b/c the bolts were locked, but rather getting the socket on the bolt head proved to be a very challenging.

In the end it came down to using a 3/8" drive rachet with a 7" & 5" extension and a 360° swivel adapter on the end with the 1/2" socket on the end.  And if you think that was it getting the wrench on the backside was even more fun.  Luckily the racheting craftsmen wrenches I previously purchased proved to be very useful in that they were not very long and I managed to tuck them in a position where would prevent the nut from moving.  With just enough room to get 1-3 rachet clicks it took a while to get the three bolts out.  But finally it was done and I moved on to the hangers with a prey bar rendering the entire exhaust fully disconnected.

Now going in the reverse proved to be the same problematic issues except now the downpipe is bigger (arrrg!).  But determination is a good friend at this point in the process and for motivation I just connected the lollipop hanger on the downpipe and hooked up the rest of the exhaust so I could see it as installed from the rear.  Ah, now that's nice and I get a second wind to tackle the cat/dp connection.

Below is the initial pic taken with my phone and as you can see the location is a bit low and to the right just enough to be annoying.  Oh but damn it sounds sweet.  Anyway, I've got a 2pm appt today at the Henry's Mufflers to get the hanger adjusted so the tip positioning is just right.  Second pic after modification is below as well.
